 Melanie Phillips sier,

"The progressive establishment regarded anyone who questioned orthodoxy as an enemy of all things decent. There was simply no argument to bed had. Any aviation had to be stamped out. Opponents were demonized, vilified and smeared. Anyone who opposed the progressive consensus was damned as racist, xenophobic, Islamophobic, homophobic, narrow minded, imbecilic and invariably "right-wing."

Hun fortsetter,

"Through demonizing its enemies in the way, the left has undermined the possibility of finding common ground and all but destroyed rational discourse. This is because it substitutes insults and abuse for arguments and reasoned disagreement."

"Only much later did I realize that the left is fundamentally illiberal"

"But I was not driven by ideology. I simply went where the evidence led me. And in time, this would lead me head-on confrontation with the left, who had replaced truth with ideology and whose weapon of choice against all dissent was vilification and demonization."

"Why did it afford next to no coverage Arab atrocities against other arabis while devoting acres of space to attacking Israel for defending itself against terrorism? The answer I received from my colleague that day stunned me. Of course there was a double standard, they said. How could there not be? The developing world did not subscribe to the same ethical belief as the west about the value of human life. The west was not entitled to judge any mass killings in the developing world by its own standards. That would be racist."

"Like most others, I had not seen 9/11 coming. Yet two days earlier in a column about the decline of Christianity in Britain, I wrote, "Liberal values will be protected only if Christianity holds the line as our dominant culture. A society which professes neutrality between cultures would create a void which Islam, wit its militant political creed, would attempt to fill. (ST, September 9, 2001)."

"Yet in that moment I also realized that the West would flinch from this fight, because it is no longer recognized the difference between good and evil or the validity of preferring some cultures to others but had decided instead that all such concepts were relative." (page 153-153)

"It helps explain what is otherwise hard to understand and bewilders so many: that our cultural and political elites have simply turned truth and justice inside out and, with argument replaced by insult and abuse, taken leave of reality itself. I believe that the left has suborned the center ground by hijacking the language of morality, virtue and progress, and that all these urgently need to be reclaimed for the true center ground."

"It feels like being excluded from a family because it has joined some kind of weird brainwashing cult. The rupture with the left feels like a bad divorce."

Til slutt sier hun,

"A culture can pull back from the brink of collapse if it tears off its suicidal blinders in time. This can still be achieved, but it requires a recognition above all the paradox that so many fail to understand. This is that freedom only exist within clear boundaries, and that preserving the values of western civilization requires a robust reassertion of the Judeo-Christian principles on which its foundation rest. And that requires moral, political and religious leadership of the highest order, not to mention buckets of courage."
