Peter Jones sier, "Protestants declared: "In the name of truth, I no longer need to submit myself to human authority," and Roman Catholics (whose philosophy was defined by the Counter Reformation and was reflected in the Spanish mentality of the Jesuits) claim: "nothing can supersede the authority given by God to the mother church." But any analysis of transcultural anthropology in Brazil needs to understand that post Catholic, post-Jesuits countries instinctively believe that authority stands above truth. In America, despite recent canes, we can challenge authority in the name of truth. This is till true, at least for now, even in legal terms with regard to the government: a clear reading of the constitution, it can itself be overthrown. North American culture still appeals to lex rex-the law is king. Law will always be associated with some concepts of truth. The Jesuit mentality, on the other hand, was rex lex-those in authority dictate the truth (the law)."

"The question is one of authority and power. Built into the foundation of the Brazilian mindset is the ungodly view of men, "who hold the truth in unrighteousness" (Rom 1:18). That is why Brazil became easy pray Positivism. The motto on the Brazilian flag reads "Order and Progress." not "Truth and Justice." The Portuguese did not come to colonize but to subdue and take spoils from the new land. Roman Catholic missionaries wanted to submit the natives to authority, not to truth. Though French and Dutch Protestants had minor influence on the brewing mindset, the Roman idea of conquest by assimilation took over. This approach has already been used in the spreading of the Roman Catholic Church to the farthest reaches of early Europe. For example, when Christian catholicity reaches the British Isles, missionaries encouraged the natives to reinterpret their "Lady of the Lake" by renaming her the Virgin Mary. Christianity thus absorbed pagan worship of personified femininity. This allowed them to continue their devotion by redefining it and adapting it to a new system. Assimilation enforces an outward conformity while leaving the deeper commitment and beliefs untouched. It is a syncretism that forces the exchange of names and appearances, yet absorbs and perpetuates the idols beneath those new Christian names. This was how the Church of Rome proceeded, through consecutive waves of missionaries who catechized the natives of Brazil, baptizing them and their culture, while allowing their old pagan ways to persist."

"The syncretistic process developed in a setting where a dominant, organized church (mainly Roman Catholic) controlled religion and authority. The Roman Catholic Church still dominates most Latin American cultures but has not challenged their pagan roots."

Vatican II, the " task of authentically interpreting the word of God, whether written or handed on, has been entrusted exclusively to the living teaching office of the Church."
